First trail of alleged Somali pirates starts in Netherlands

Somali-piratesFor the first time in Europe, the trail of Somali pirates has started in Netherlands. The group of five men have denied of any intention of hijacking the cargo ship in the Netherlands Antilles.

They have also said that they were on a normal fishing trip. They were sentenced up to 12 years of jail for this accusation.

In the year 2009 the Somali pirates have attempted more than 200 attacks on the Somalia coast. There all together 400 attacks world wide. The five men had been trialed in district court of Rotterdam and the court has already given its verdict.

All of them were arrested in the month of January last year accused of preparing to board the Danish cargo ship registered in the Caribbean.

One of the accused Farah Ahmed Yusuf aged 25 has said in the court that the intention was for fishing.

It was not to hijack the ship. In the ocean the engine of their boat had broken down and they were trying to get the attention of the warship for help.
