Lax surgeries have increased which has increased compensations paid by the NHS as well. NHS has to pay out millions of pounds as compensation for the surgical equipment which is left inside patients after the operation is completed.

According to the Sun, which cited data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, these type of careless actions has been witnessed several times, with more than 500 patients reportedly have something or the other left inside them. These equipments could be anything from swabs, clips, screws, needles or gauze.

This could be hard to believe, but the truth is that the NHS has compensated the patients with more than £10million in five years.

Over 2008-09, victims of these careless actions received an average of £25,000 each, with biggest payout bagged by patients who had swabs left inside them, who garnered £157,488 and £104,500 in damages.

"However, if patients do not receive the treatment they should and mistakes are made, it is right that they are compensated and have access to legal representation”, a Department of Health spokesman said.
