French Doctor finds a “Miracle Cure for Alcoholism”

French Doctor finds a “Miracle Cure for Alcoholism”A French doctor has reported that he has discovered a ‘miracle’ cure for alcoholism. Well, the “miracle cure for alcoholism” is a drug known as beclofen, which cures muscle spasms and kills an intolerable carving for alcohol among addicted people.

According to Dr Olivier Ameisen, beclofen is a cheap drug. In his book titled, Le Dernier Verre [The Last Glass], Dr Ameisen, claims that drug is so effective that alcoholics can easily get rid of his habit with the help of drugs.

Leading British newspaper, The Independent quoted him as saying, “Mine is the first case in which a course of medicine has completely suppressed alcohol addiction. Now I can have a glass and it has no effect. Above all, I no longer have that irrepressible need to drink.”

Dr Renaud de Beaurepaire of Paul-Guiraud hospital at Villejuif near Paris has successfully tested the drug and support Ameisen’s claims. He said, “I prescribed it to two alcoholics who were at the end of the road. It was pretty miraculous.”

Medical experts and anti-alcoholism campaigners has doubt about his claims. Xavier Laqueille, the head of the St Anne hospital in Paris which treats addicts, said, “Alcoholism is a complex disease, in which both neuro-biological and psycho-social factors are entwined.”

“Encouraging people to think there is a miracle molecule is to completely misunderstand the nature of alcoholism and extremely irresponsible,” said Dr Michel Renaud of the Paul-Brousse hospital in Paris.
