Fresh video threat to Germany before election

Minister: Terrorist threat to Germany ahead of electionBerlin- A fresh Islamist threat to Germany via an internet video showed up Sunday, raising new concerns that terrorists may be trying to frighten German voters before a general election in a week's time.

The speaker in the short film was Bekkay Harrach, 32, a German of Moroccan parentage, according to IntelCenter, a company based near Washington DC which specializes in scanning the web for Islamist activity.

Harrach, wearing a jacket and tie and styling himself "Abu-Talha, the German," had fronted a previous video, his third, on Friday.

That message warned Muslims in Germany to avoid public places for two weeks after the September 27 poll.

Germany's BKA federal police confirmed in Berlin Sunday that a new "message" had appeared, but added only that it contained no specific threat. A BKA spokeswoman said the content still had to be analysed.

The Friday video had said Germany faced a "rude awakening" if it did not withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.

IntelCenter said the fourth and latest video lasted 39 minutes and showed Harrach robed. The audio was in German.

It was apparently also uploaded on Friday, but not to as-Sahab, the al-Qaeda propaganda website which issued Harrach's other three videos. First accounts said Harrach spoke in it anew about the German troops in Afghanistan.

Federal police officers wearing bullet-proof vests and toting sub-machine-guns fanned out to patrol German airports, major railway stations and the street outside Berlin's Jewish Museum after the Friday video emerged. (dpa)
