Gary Glitter’s brick on Cavern Club''s wall of fame removed
London, Nov 15 : Pop paedophile Gary Glitter’s brick on the Cavern Club''s Wall of Fame has been removed, and replaced by the name of the lead singer of The Mighty Wah!
The brick had caused outrage and had been asked to be removed, but the management of the club had originally refused to replace it, saying that it was “a historical document”.
It was only after calls from a Merseyside MP and consultation with a child abuse victim, that the club’s stonemason chiselled it away, and Pete Wylie, the Merseyside 80s pop icon and lead singer of The Mighty Wah!, was put in his place.
West Derby MP Bob Wareing, who had led the calls to have the brick removed, said that it was not appropriate to have Glitter’s name on the wall.
“I didn''t think he was a good role model and I wouldn''t myself have wanted to put his name up,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.
“I understand the club wanting to put across the history of the Cavern Club and really not leaving anything out. But on the other hand this is a special case,” he added.
The Cavern had removed all Glitter memorabilia but not changed the brick - the wall carried the names of the bands that played the club between 1957 and 1973.
Dave Jones, one of the directors of The Cavern, said that the club asked a victim of child abuse for his thoughts on the Glitter brick, and only then did they reverse their policy and take it down.
“It’s not there any more and as far as I''m concerned that''s the end of it,” Jones stated. (ANI)
