Gel for repairing cleft lips
The report which came from Oxford University elucidated the discovery of the new treatment measures for combating the cleft lip palates in children.
The cure which is possible by the usage of a gel was previously operated by surgical procedure. It was observed that the surgery posed health complications pertaining to speech and appearance. This method eliminates the chance of these complications.
The gel acts as a contact lens that acts by soaking the water, swelling to 10 times its original size, reports dailymail.uk. Researcher David Bucknall says, 'It is significantly better than anything we can do now'.
The procedure involves insertion of small discs of the gel under the skin, close to the cleft, which expand as they take in water from the body and fresh skin grows over them. The discs are removed after six or eight weeks and the fresh skin is stitched to the freshly grown skin.
This technique seeks to enter in the market by 2013.
