Gene linked to breast cancer spread found

Gene linked to breast cancer spread found Scientists all over the world are continuously striving to find ways to conquer breast cancer which kills many women each other. Recent study has once again given hope of finding efficient way to fight breast cancer. Research team believes that NRG1 (neuregulin-1) gene, located on chromosome 8, aids in suppressing growth of cancer.

Research team led by Dr Paul Edwards also believes that this particular gene plays an important role in many bowel, prostate, ovarian and bladder tumours. After analyzing breast cancer samples it was found that cancerous cells often miss this part of that chromosome.

Dr Paul Edwards said: "I believe NRG1 could be the most important tumour suppresser gene discovery in the last 20 years as it gives us vital information about a new mechanism that causes breast cancer."

"We have got strong evidence that the gene is implicated in breast cancer but we have no reason to think it's not the same for other cancers, including prostate and colon cancer."

However more study is needed to study link between the gene and breast cancer development. It is believed that discovery of this gene can open new avenues for the diagnosis and treatment of the breast cancer.
