German election result "a win for opposition to Turkey"

German election result "a win for opposition to Turkey"Istanbul  - Turkish media Monday were expecting renewed difficulties for the country's plans to enter into the EU after German Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right coalition government won the country's elections.

"The opposition to Turkey has won in Germany," wrote daily newspaper Milliyet. It was now to be expected that rhetoric against Turkish entry would increase.

Daily newspaper Zaman wrote that "the election result is a risk for Turkey." It would have negative consequences for Turkey's path to EU membership.

The news channel CNN Turk also said that, for Ankara, the "worst scenario" had now become reality.

Media commentators wrote that Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy could now become even more vocal in their opposition to Turkish EU entry.

In the past, both have warned against a continuously expanding Europe which accepts new members but is no longer capable of acting.

Merkel has advocated a "privileged partnership" for Turkey, rather than full EU membership, often prompting angry reaction from Turkish politicians.(dpa)
