Germany to seek clarification on relations from Iran envoy

Germany to seek clarification on relations from Iran envoyBerlin - Germany has asked Iran's ambassador to clarify statements about his country's future relations with Berlin, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.

The spokesman said the envoy had been invited to the ministry later in the day, but had not been summoned.

The spokesman said the governments in London and Paris also planned to seek clarification from the Iranian envoys in their respective countries.

Iranian government officials said over the weekend that Tehran was reviewing relations with Germany, France, Britain and the United States because of their attitude towards the disputed June 12 presidential elections.

On Sunday, Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Iranian authorities to conduct a recount in the election, which saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared winner with more than 60 per cent of the vote.

Opposition leader Mir-Hossein Moussavi has alleged the vote was manipulated in favour of the president and called for a new ballot.

Iran was witnessed violent street protests since the result was announced, with at least 10 protesters reported killed. (dpa)
