Hairy skin is a defense against bed bugs, study

According to a new research by UK researchers, people with hairy skin are more likely to be protected from bed bug. Researchers from Sheffield University in the UK said that hair help slow down the bed bugs and it helps alert the victim. The research found that bugs on a shaved arm are more likely to try to feed than on unshaved arms.

Prof Michael Siva-Jothy, from Sheffield University's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences carried out the experiment on 29 volunteers, who bravely agreed to be tested on with bugs. The bugs were left to find a place and were removed as soon as they were about to bite.

The researchers found that both longer visible hairs and finer hair helped reduce the changed of being bitten by the bed bugs. The finer "vellus" hairs also acted as an early warning system to protect against the bugs. The hair slowed down the insect as they tried to find a spot to bite the victim. "Our findings show that more body hairs mean better detection of parasites - the hairs have nerves attached to them and provide us with the ability to detect displacement," said Siva-Jothy.
