Heart Risks Associated with Obesity have been Underestimated - Study

ObesityA new study has suggested that the risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases brought on by obesity might just be much more than previously estimated.

For the sake of study, the new research measured the Body Mass Index and rate of mortality among over a million pairs of Swedish sons and their parents, who were over 50 years of age. More focus was on the children, as BMI of parents could be linked to the illnesses that they suffer from, instead of the extra weight alone.

After careful analysis of the data, researchers discovered strong links between BMI of offsprings and the rate of parents' mortality. The risk of developing a "coronary heart disease" for a mother, for example, is hiked by about 1.15 times and 1.10 times for a father, depending upon the BMI of the child.

The research has asserted that the link to cardiovascular diseases-related deaths is far stronger than previous studies have pegged.

The study, carried out by a team of researchers from Bristol University and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, has been detailed in the Wednesday issue of the British Medical Journal.
