Heartburn Pills Ups Osteoporosis Risk

Heartburn Pills Ups Osteoporosis RiskAccording to new research, heartburn pills have been associated to an increased risk of the bone disease osteoporosis.

Under the study, boffins found the link between the medications used by millions of patients to cure indigestion and heartburn, called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and broken bones later in life.

Earlier in the year 2006, University of Pennsylvania scientists discovered that patients having proton pump inhibitors for ove a year were 44% more likely to suffer a hip fracture.

And in the year 2008, a group at the University of Manitoba in Canada detected a similar increase in risk among those taking the drugs regularly for five years.

Rob Dawson, of the National Osteoporosis Society, said, "All drugs carry some risks so you have to weigh them against the overall benefits." (With Inputs from Agencies)
