Hoeness' viewing licence idea met with scepticsim, opposition

Hoeness' viewing licence idea met with scepticsim, opposition Munich  - A monthly Bundesliga viewing licence proposal from Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness was met with scepticism and outright opposition on Monday.

Hoeness told the Wirtschaftswoche magazine that the 37 million television households should pay 2 euros (2.6 dollars) a month which would generate around 900 million euros per year and bring Germany closer to the big football TV deals in England and elsewhere.

The English deal is worth around 1.2 billion euros, while the German clubs see an increase from 300 to 412 million euros next season, still one third of the English figure.

"I consider his thoughts not realistic and over the top," said Germany's leading sports parliamentarian Peter Danckert.

The German Olympic committee named the idea interesting but those who are not interested in football would have to pay as well, and that smaller sports would suffer even more.

Politicians insisted that television fees were a result of political decisions. Bundesliga club officials were not outright opposed to the idea but remained sceptical. (dpa)
