A recent study has offered some hope of finding a cure for colic condition in infants. Colic is a term used to describe inconsolable crying in a perfectly healthy baby. Till now, the reason behind this condition was not known. According to statistics, nearly 15% infants suffer from this condition.

The study indicated that stomach inflammation caused by a bacterium, which occurs naturally in the body, can make babies colicky.

The research team at the University of Texas Health Science Centre found that a single bacterium called Klebsiella was more common in babies with colic, as compared to babies without this problem.

The research team examined 36 infants. It was found that half of the infants with colic had a high concentration of Klebsiella, and were continuously fighting gut inflammation in the intestines caused by it.

Lead researcher, Professor J Marc Rhoads said: "Inflammation in the gut of colicky infants closely compared to levels in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Colic could prove to be a precursor to other gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease and allergic gastro-enteropathies."

The research team believes cure for colic could be found, based on the research findings. However, they added that more study needs to be done to find that whether the colic bacterium can be controlled by using "probiotics", the "good" bacteria.
