Hope to reverse ageing clock of muscles

Hope to reverse ageing clock of musclesOld age affects muscles and body's ability to regenerate muscle. Recent study has given hope of restoring youthful vigor to the ageing muscles. Research team at the University of California, Berkeley, has discovered important biochemical pathways which influence ageing of human muscle.

Research team claims that "the right mix of biochemical signals" can restore ability of old human muscle to mend and reconstruct itself.

Research team reached at the findings after analyzing data collected from 30 healthy men. The average age of first group was 22 years while average age of other group was 71 years. Samples of muscle tissue of these men were studied during the research.

Initially research team compared muscle samples of both groups then the study subjects were put in leg casts for two weeks to reproduce muscle atrophy. Then again muscle samples were studied.

Lead researcher, Professor Irina Conboy said: "Our study shows that the ability of old human muscle to be maintained and repaired by muscle stem cells can be restored to youthful vigor given the right mix of biochemical signals."
