Hypoglycaemic episodes more common that initially thought Recent survey indicate that it might be possible that people suffering from type two diabetes are being overtreated as evident by the increasing number of mild to moderate hypoglycaemic episodes regularly experienced by diabetics.

Recent survey commissioned by the charity Diabetes UK was based on the data collected from 2,000 type two diabetics. Data analysis revealed that 49% of the people surveyed experienced at least one mild to moderate hypo within a two-week period.

More than half of study subjects believed that such mild to moderate hypoglycaemic episodes affect their life. Around one in ten revealed that sometimes they have to take one day off work a year due to hypoglycaemic episode.

Nearly a third of study subjects said that hypo negatively affects their routine work. 35% study subjects said that hypos affected their sleep. Diabetics involved in the study were not on insulin.

Dr Brian Karet, a GP in Bradford and a medical advisor for Diabetes UK, said the figures in the survey seemed high but he agreed there was a lot of hidden hypoglycaemia. It is a lot more common than is often recognized especially these days when we are encouraged to put people on multiple medications.
