Hyundai to shift i20 manufacturing to Europe
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) is set to shift the production of the export versions of i20 in some European countries, in a bid to make it competitive in the global market.
The auto maker, that manufactured 73000 units till June, is said to have identified three locations - Czech Republic, Slovakia and Turkey - to roll out the export version of i20.
The firm will save the 6.5 per cent import duty, levied by European nations on cars exported from India, besides reducing logistics cost of shipping the cars by producing them in Europe.
Mr. H.S. Lheem, the Managing Director of Hyundai India, said that the firm will soon finalize the global location for manufacturing i20, which is currently being manufactured at HMIL's second plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Lheem said that there would not be any adverse impact on the domestic production on account of shifting production plant in Europe. He added that domestic demand of car market will pick up in future, in line with government's measures to stimulate demand in the auto sector.
Mr. Lheem said: "We are asking the Government to declare HMIL as a public utility."
