Ikea’s first India store may come up in Greater NoidaSwedish retailer Ikea's first furniture store may come up Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Ikea officials's recent meeting with state principal secretary for infrastructure & industrial development, Surya Pratap Singh, suggested.

Some senior officials of Ikea India reportedly met with Mr. Surya and told him that Uttar Pradesh is one of the retailer's priority states and that the retailer would assist in the growth furniture sector.

Ikea officials also assured Mr. Surya that the retailer was committed to generate new opportunities for local manufacturers.

Following the meeting, Jeff Dolin, property manager at Ikea India, said, "Our expansion in UP will depend upon our experience from the first store."

Media reports also suggest that the Uttar Pradesh government has offered to provide the retailer with land required for the store at a site in Greater Noida along with the necessary infrastructure.

Ikea, which has so far failed to get the right location for its first store in India, previously focused on Hyderabad, but the political disturbance in Andhra Pradesh reportedly forced it to select a new location.

Ikea's proposal for setting up furniture stores in India was approved by the government on 2nd of May this year. The retailer is expected to invest Rs 10,500 crore in the coming years in India.
