India beats Malaysia in Asian Basketball ChampionshipIndian team registered their first win as they defeated Malaysia 90-74 in the playoff match of the 23rd FIBA women’s Asian Basketball Championship (ABC) at the JL Indoor Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday.

India dominated throughout the match except the second quarter in which they were trailing by 20-26. Indian team was leading by 47-32 at the half time. Harjeet Kaur was top scorer in the match with 31 points.

Jose (21) and Raspreet (11) also contributed well in India’s alone victory in the tournament. Beng Fong Goh (16), Yann Yann Pee (15) and Suik May Kew (14) were among the top scorers for the Malaysian team.

With this win, India has made into the elite group of the Level-I. Indian team ‘s chief coach J B Singh said that they will work hard for their preparation for the 2011 event as they would not want to repeat this disappointing performance again in the next championship.

Meanwhile, Lebanon has advanced to Level-I after thrashing Thailand 83-58. Anderson was top scored with 24 points while Chada Nasr (23) and Nisrin Dandan (15) also helped Lebanon to win the match.
