India’s food inflation rises to 10.60 per cent
The food inflation in India had risen again to end up in double digits at 10.60 per cent for the week ending October 8 due to higher prices of vegetables, fruits, milk and protein-based items.
The level of 10.60 per cent of food inflation, which is measured by Wholesale Price Index (WPI), is the highest in almost six months. The food inflation was 9.32% in the previous week and was at the level of 15.72% in the corresponding week of 2010.
According to the latest data released by the government, vegetables became 17.59% costilier Fruits grew dearer by 12.39%, milk by 10.80% and eggs, meat and fish by 14.10%, on a year-on-year basis. Pulses and cereal prices also rose 7.42% and 4.73%, repectively from the same period in 2010.
On the other hand, onions became 11.27 cheaper and the prices of wheat came down by 0.18% in the week. The inflation in overall primary articles stood at 11.18% compared to 10.60% in the previous week.
The inflation for non-food items including fibres, oil seeds and minerals at 8.51% during the week compared to 9.59% in the previous week while Fuel and power inflation stood at 15.17%.
The headline inflation stood at around .72% in September this year.
