Insulin Lessens Obesity-Related Swelling

Insulin Lessens Obesity-Related SwellingResearchers have discovered that one of the most common side effects of obesity - inflammation - can be fought by having insulin.

As an additional advantage, the group behind the work said that this also lessens one's possibility of developing diabetes.

The noteworthy discovery was recently presented in a new thesis, written by specialists at the Sahlgrenska Academy of the University of Gothenburg, in Sweden.

When you put on weight, your fat tissue develops and starts to create a wealth of inflammatory molecules.

The increase in these inflammatory particles leaves the fat tissue in a state of unrelieved inflammation.

This plays a vital role in the development of insulin resistance, an early stage of type 2 diabetes, where the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels using its own insulin.

Emelie Wallerstedt from the Institute of Medicine at the University of Gothenburg said, "It''s still not entirely clear why obesity causes insulin resistance. Inflammation could be part of the reason why obesity leads to type 2 diabetes."

The study has established that both obesity and insulin resistance are affected by inflammatory conditions inside the body.

Earlier it was thought that fat tissue served merely as a depository for fat, but now researchers know that it is also a vital organ for the release of a wide variety of different substances, comprising inflammatory molecules.

In the new research, the researchers managed to discover the properties of the inflammatory molecule IL-6.

A better understanding of these signaling mechanisms could make it possible in the future to build up medicines, which can "turn off" the inflammation and so lessen the insulin risk resistance and other obesity-related troubles. (With Inputs from Agencies)
