An Integrated Survival Facility on Dialing 108

The TamilNadu government, in a joint venture with the Emergency Management and Research Institute have launched an integrated emergency service to attend to all medical, fire and police emergencies.

One of the first ever public/private ventures, set up at the cost of 70 crores, will have the facility available in the city and its suburbs. It aims at covering the entire state by the yearend, said the health minister M R K Paneerselvam.

On dialing a toll free number 108, a centralized emergency response centre will receive the calls and an ambulance will be dispatched. Within a few minutes the police investigation team will also reach the spot and if need be so will the fire fighters. At this point the 'Golden Hour Concept 'comes into action .The Software which has been developed by Satyam Technologies has set up a network, connecting the medical, fire and police services. The team has carried out a number of mock drills and is ready to face the music.

The chief executive officer of the EMRI has stated that 438 Million people have been covered by the scheme, and envisaged to Save many lives by treating patients within the first hour of the accident. The state proposes to increase its fleet of Ambulances to 600 and provide facilities like emergency equipment including defibrillators, ventilators, GIS and GPS system.
