Iran will face new sanctions if it refuses new offer, US says

Iran will face new sanctions if it refuses new offer, US says Washington  - The United States Monday warned that Iran would face new Security Council sanctions if it did not accept an offer of fresh talks and incentives to end its nuclear activities.

The European Union's foreign policy chief Javier Solana was set to receive a response from Iran Tuesday to a July 19 proposal, which offered far-reaching economic cooperation with Iran in return for a pledge from Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.

The Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany were united in their threat to slap additional economic and diplomatic sanctions on Iran if its reaction to the new offer was not positive, State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said.

"We agreed in the absence of a clear, positive response from Iran, we have no choice but to pursue further measures against Iran as part of the strategy," Gallegos said.

Iran met with a delegation of the five permanent members of the Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany on July 19 in Geneva.

The United States sent Undersecretary of State William Burns to the meeting - the highest level diplomatic meeting between the two countries in nearly three decades. (dpa)
