Jordaan happy with progress at PE stadium

2010 World Cup LogoPort Elizabeth, South Africa - The Chief Executive Officer of the local organizing committee of the 2010 World Cup (LOC) Danny Jordaan said on Tuesday that he was satisfied with the progress being made in the completion of the stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth.

The stadium was last year controversially scrapped as one of the venues for this year's Confederations Cup when officials were worried that it would not be ready in time.

Jordaan, who was on a visit to his home town and inspected the stadium, said that he was happy with the progress being made.

"We at the LOC are delighted with the progress made with the construction of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. It is extremely exciting to see a brand new 2010 World Cup venue taking shape so many months ahead of its World Cup completion deadline," he said.

In a statement issued by the LOC, the organization said that Jordaan was able to walk on the newly laid pitch and take in a view of a stadium that has 40 000 of its 48 000 seats already installed.

The stadium will be the first newly-constructed 2010 World Cup stadium to be completed. (dpa)
