Jordan summons envoys of UN Security Council member states
Amman - Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Bashir on Saturday summoned ambassadors of the five UN Security Council veto powers and urged the world community "to shoulder its responsibilities" in forcing Israel to stop its military escalation on the Gaza Strip.
Bashir urged the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China to "move promptly to stop the Israeli aggression and violations which so far killed a large number of Palestinians," the official Petra news agency said.
"Jordan condemns this unjustified military escalation," the minister said after the launch of an Israeli land offensive after eight days of aerial strikes.
He warned that "the continuation of violence and military operations will aggravate the crisis and will not achieve security for Israel."
Earlier Saturday, hundreds of Jordanian politicians and trade unionists staged a sit-in outside the Parliament to urge a rupture of diplomatic ties with Israel and the abrogation of the peace treaty that Jordan concluded with the Jewish state in 1994. (dpa)
