Kolkata doctor arrested for rape of patientA resident medical officer of Kolkata’s Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital has been arrested on charges of rape. Shaibal Maitra (36) was arrested on Friday after a 35-year-old woman, who was earlier Maitra’s patient, lodged an FIR with Entally police station in central Kolkata.

Maitra, who was attached to the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, was produced before a court on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

In her complaint, the woman, a fashion designer, alleged she was promised marriage only to be spurned later. “The doctor promised to take me to his residence as his wife. He took me to a south Kolkata hotel and became intimate with me,” she said her complaint.

Maitra allegedly took around Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) and valuables such as a ring and mobile phones from her. But after February, he started avoiding her, the complaint said.

Maitra was charged with rape and cheating (Sections 376 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code) and is lodged in Alipore Central Jail.

However, hospital authorities claimed to have no knowledge of the developments even five days after the arrest. “I don’t know anything about it,” said hospital superintendent Debasish Bhattacharya.
