Leader's death: VHP calls for Orissa bandh

The fire of protest was ignited by the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his disciples in an ashram at Jalespeta in Kandhmal district. The fire was visible when number of incidents of attacks on religious places took place across Orissa on Sunday.

On Monday, curfew was ordered by the administration in parts of Kandhmal district, as a dawn-to-dusk Orissa bandh was started by Sangh Parivar. CM Naveen Patnaik appealed to all the communities to maintain peace. Further suspension was passed against Kandhmal SP announcement of judicial action was made for the Saturday’s killings

The atmosphere was further tensed when the four bodies were taken from Jalespeta to Chakapada, which led to a violent scene when an intolerant mob attacked the vehicles at Baliguda, G-Udayagiri and Nuagaon. Heavy damage to police outpost and NGO offices at Nuagaon was also followed. At some places the angry mob even attacked churches halls and prayer places.

Police reported, “There were reports of attacks on religious places. We are keeping a strict vigil.” Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Talcher, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Koraput, Bolangir, Sonepur and Kendrapada, were other places where demonstrations took place.

The condition is so worse that Govt. and saffron brigade also entered into the conflict as according to former, Maoists are responsible for killings, but according to the latter, Christians are to be blamed.

VHP state general secretary Gouri Prasad Rath, who also demanded demanding a high-level probe and ban on churches in Kandhmal, said, “Christians have killed Swamiji. We will give a befitting reply.”

Right now, the security measures have been tightened in Kandhmal and other sensitive areas. In the southern Orissa district, nearly 20 units of state police and four companies of CRPF have been organized, in order to keep situation under control.
