Mandela left $4-million estate

Nelson-MandelaJohannesburg, Feb 3 : Former South African president Nelson Mandela, who died last December, left an estate valued at more than 46 million rand ($4.13 million), according to his will that was revealed Monday.

Mandela's will, a 40-page document, was read out by executor Justice Dikgang Moseneke, one of the executors of Mandela's estate, at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg, Xinhua reported.

According to his will, close personal staff get 50,000 rand each. The schools which the former South African president attended will receive 100,000 rand each, the BBC reported.

Mandela, who died Dec 5, 2013 at the age of 95, left behind an estate that includes an upmarket house in Johannesburg, a modest dwelling in his rural Eastern Cape province and royalties from book sales, including his autobiography, 'Long Walk to Freedom'.

He also left 100,000 rand to each of the four other educational institutions he attended during his life for scholarships and grants.

These institutions include Wits University, Qunu Secondary School and Orlando West High School in Soweto near Johannesburg.

The executor said the Mandela family was "well pleased" by his will.

The family trust will receive 1.5 million rand as well as royalties.

There is a 90-day period in which the will can be contested.

The African National Congress will also receive some royalties which will be used at the discretion of the party's executive committee and to spread awareness about the principles and policies of the party. (IANS)
