Marriage, divorce play role in weight gain

Marriage, divorce play role in weight gainLondon, Aug 23 : If you have been thinking that you are putting on weight since being married, you are probably right. For, a research has found marriage and divorce are both bad for one's waistline.

While women tend to gain weight after their wedding day, men are more likely to pile on the pounds after a marital breakdown, Daily Express reported.

The likelihood of major weight gain after marriage or divorce increases most for individuals above 30.

Study leader Dmitry Tumin said: "Divorces for men and, to some extent, marriages for women promote weight gains that may be large enough to pose a health risk."

Zhenchao Qian, a professor of sociology and part of the research team at Ohio State University, said: "Married women often have a larger role around the house than men do, and they may have less time to exercise and stay fit than similar unmarried women.

"On the other hand, studies show men get a health benefit from marriage and lose it once divorced, which may lead to weight gain."

Researchers used survey data on over 10,000 people while taking account of other factors that can influence changes in weight, including pregnancy, poverty, socioeconomic status and education.

It was found both - men and women - married or divorced, were more likely than never-married individuals to experience a small level of weight gain after a "marital transition".(IANS)
