McDonald’s workers say the raise that the company is giving is too little

Earlier, there were reports that McDonald’s, world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, is giving everybody a raise. But according to the company’s workers, the raise is too low. Julia Andino, who worked at McDonald’s franchises, heard the news when she was sleeping. A phone call awaked her. The excited voice was of her friend, who said that McDonald’s has decided to give everybody a raise.

According to Andino, it was surprising. After hearing the news, her mind started whirring. Andino started thinking that the extra money could help her in paying her phone bill or owing a babysitter for her -year-old son.

By Thursday morning, Andino’s hopes deflated when she learnt that McDonald’s was just giving $1 an hour more than that. Currently, Andino earns $8.75 an hour. Andino also found that the pay increase was only for employees of company-owned stores for employees like Andino.

When other employees like Andino came to know about the news, they decided to gather in Midtown Manhattan to ask for better pay. To keep her hopes alive, Andino joined the dozens of other fast-food workers in the Midtown Manhattan. According to the employees, the money that McDonald’s offered was too little.

The 20-year-old Andino, who have joined protestors who continued to press McDonald’s and other retailers to increase wages to $15 an hour, said, “We’re making progress. If we continue fighting, we’re going to end up winning”.

According to reports, over the past few months, many big companies announced pay increases for low-wage employees. In February this year, Wal-Mart, which is the nation’s largest private employer, announced that it decided to increase the hourly pay for a half-million employees to $9 an hour starting this month and to at least $10 by February.
