Microsoft’s latest IE ad – ‘Child of the 90s’ - tugs at heartstrings of now-grown Gen-Y
Microsoft's latest ad for its widely popular Internet Explorer (IE) browser tugs at the heartstrings of the now-grown Generation Y; bringing back the bitter-sweet memories of the 1995-launched web browser.
The new 1:40 video ad for the IE has been dubbed `Child of the 90s;' and it takes the gen-Y users to the early days of the browser, showing snapshots of transient 1990s fads, like Slap Wraps and Pogs.
With the new IE commercial featuring some of the most legendary toys, games, utilities, and fashion-trends of the 1990s, the ad's amusement for the gen-Y users chiefly lies in the inadvertent testing of their own pop culture knowledge, when the different accessories, foods, and pieces of technology flash briefly across the screen.
With a narrator describing the scenario of the 1990s alongside the heart-tugging snapshots, the ad nostalgically concludes: "You grew up. So did we."
Noting that the new IE ad underscores Microsoft attempts to "invite those of you who haven't thought about Internet Explorer in a while to take a trip down memory lane," IE Marketing Director Roger Capriotti said that the IE - which held 54.77 percent of the desktop browser market in December 2012 - is "a child of the 90s," but it has definitely "done some serious growing up."
