Microsoft’s Q2 revenue boosted by Windows 8 sales

Microsoft’s Q2 revenue boosted by Windows 8 salesOn Thursday, software giant Microsoft announced its financial results for the October-December quarter; posting a 24 percent increase in Windows Division revenue, thanks largely to the sales of the company's latest OS version, Windows 8.

Presenting the quarterly results during a January 24 earnings call for investors, Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein said that the company's revenue figures stood at $22 billion (non-GAAP); thereby marking a 5 percent jump over the same quarter earlier year figures. On a GAAP basis, the company's revenue for the reporting quarter was $21.5 billion; as against the year before figures of $20.8 billion.

The profit of the company during the quarter which ended December 31, 2012, was $6.38 billion, or 76 cents per share; which was slightly lower than the same quarter year before profit figures of $6.62 billion, or 78 cents per share.

With the quarterly results posted by Microsoft being almost in line with the Wall Street projections, the company said that the record revenue figures for the quarter - Microsoft's second quarter - were chiefly an outcome of brisk business demand and some crucial product releases, including Windows 8 OS and the company's Surface tablet.

With Microsoft's Windows Division having generated a total of $5.88 billion in revenue during the quarter, Chris Suh - general manager of Microsoft Investor Relations - said: "Non-OEM revenue grew over 40 percent, driven by Windows 8 upgrades, sales of Surface and double-digit growth in volume licensing."
