George MitchellAmman - US Middle East envoy George Mitchell held talks Saturday with Jordan's King Abdullah II and pledged Washington's commitment to the establishment of an "independent Palestinian state" that lives in peace with Israel, according to a royal court statement.

"The monarch underscored the importance of the US role in world efforts aimed at bringing about comprehensive peace in the Middle East," it added.

King Abdullah also urged speedy Palestinian reconciliation as a prerequisite for Palestinian statehood and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
