Myanmar rejects ASEAN statement of concern over Suu Kyi

Myanmar rejects ASEAN statement of concern over Suu Kyi Yangon  - Myanmar's military government Sunday lodged a complaint with the chair of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) over the organization's statement of concern over the health of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

According to state-run Myanmar TV, the announcement said the ASEAN "statement (last week) interferes in Myanmar's internal politics, and also deviates from the ASEAN charter."

It also said the statement was wrong in questioning Suu Kyi's health, saying that opposition leader, who is facing charges of violating the terms of her detention by allowing a US national to swim this month to her compound-cum-prison on Inya Lake in Yangon, is "in good health" and being cared for.

The Myanmar democracy leader on Friday pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her trial continues on Monday.

Thailand, in its position as chair of ASEAN, early last week expressed the group's "grave concern" about the trial in Myanmar, which is also a member of the 10-nation regional grouping.

The broadcast said Myanmar's military government is holding Thailand responsible for the statement, which Myanmar claims was never discussed at ASEAN ministerial meetings.

ASEAN has previously asked the ruling military junta of Myanmar, also known as Burma, to free Suu Kyi, who has spent 13 of the past 19 years under detention. (dpa)
