Natural or Artificial pitch at FIFA 2010

Natural or Artificial pitch at FIFA 2010The pitch report of the recent FIFA 2010 states that it has been made of GrassMaster technology that binds the grass with artificial turfs.

When ESPN commentator Adrian Healy stated that 2 million artificial fibers were woven into the Moses Mabhida Stadium pitch, it was a shock for many (if not any! at least for me), as it was understood that the game was played on a field comprised typically of grass.

The recent close-up images of the same indicate that the field is predominantly composed of grass which is further supported by 2 million artificial turf fibers.

This technique of binding is called as GrassMaster (a brand name), and is considered a work of Desso Sports, which is an artificial turf company that's been in the biz for about 20 years.

Teams such as the Denver Broncos; and Premiership clubs in Chelsea and Arsenal have also used this grass-turf hybrid in their respective stadiums, which has become a household name. Well, this interesting piece of information gains support from all the football geeks (I guess!).
