New Independent Environmental Body for India
Due to holding and cancelling of various major environmental projects, the Indian market has experienced several annoyed investors and therefore worried markets. Therefore, the PM finally has decided to set up an independent environmental regulator who, by reviewing the investment projects for clearance, would flee the government from this phase of making unpopular choices. Yes, sometimes the government is forced to make a choice between spurring development and protection to ecology, which becomes a difficult decision for it.
As said by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “The environment should no longer be treated with passive disregard. The new National Environment Appraisal and Monitoring Authority could lead to a ``complete change'' in how clearances are granted, as projects would be reviewed by ``better and more objective standards of scrutiny''. However, till now, no further details have been disclosed.
It is expected that this independent regulatory body “The National Environment Appraisal and Monitoring Authority for environmental monitoring and clearances” would completely change the entire process of granting environmental clearances. And with a dedicated professional staff, it would aim to evolve better and more objective standards of scrutiny.
Presently, for evaluating various projects about environmental clearances and for recommending changes to the ministry, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has appointed few ad hoc committees who would work on this project.
