New warning sign to come on cigarette packs

Tobacco-KillsIn June all cigarette packs will carry a scary pictorial warning showing the impacts of smoking, confirms the Health Ministry.

This picture, which will supposedly be put into use, was chosen after a survey was conducted across the seven states of India.

Remarkably, it has shown a repulse which may keep the people away from smoking or chewing tobacco.

The picture will show "a rotting cancer-stricken mouth" and will carry the warning signs which will says, "Tobacco Kills" and "Tobacco Causes Cancer," in all local languages.

This comes from the Health Ministry and was supposed to start on March 5. An official at the Ministry states, "Pictorial warning labels, that can convey risks of smoking to the large number of illiterate adults in India who smoke, might be a particularly effective strategy".

It has been seen that tobacco mortality is closely related to illiteracy. 50 per cent of tobacco causalities occur in illiterate adults, of which 80 per cent live in rural India.
