No threats of cancer associated with Kidney transplant drugs

No threats of cancer associated with Kidney transplant drugsA recent finding confirms that cancer is caused by total immune suppression rather than specific medications, 'kidney transplant drugs' also, no single medication seems to increase this risk.

For generations it has been seen that kidney transplants have proven efficient for patients giving them additional years of fruitful life. It was also been claimed that risk of developing side effects in the form of cancer becomes high, whilst taking immunosuppressive drugs to prevent organ rejection. This study refutes this concept.

It was an observation based random study that considered the data from 1983, involving an international team to review on the trends amongst 481 patients over 20 years and thus providing the most concrete evidence till date. It was seen that 226 patients developed at least one type cancer. 20 years post transplant, 27 per cent of patients developed non-skin cancer and a 48 per cent of patients developed skin cancer.

According to lead author Dr Martin Gallagher, the George Institute states that the cancer risk is majorly caused due many symptoms, such as age and smoking history, and whilst transplantation patients are at a higher risk. He finally concluded by stating, "Much debate has focused on the effects of various agents and dose regimens, but our analysis would suggest that cancer risk is driven by total immune suppression rather than specific medications."
