Sydney  - A 4.5-metre saltwater crocodile was shot dead outside a house in Australia's far north, news reports said Thursday.

Northern Territory police were called to the Daly River community near Darwin on Wednesday and decided against trapping the animal because so much of the region is in flood.

Crocs are protected in Australia, except where human life is at risk. (dpa)
