The fallopian tubes were obtained from fertile women between 35-53 years during hysterectomy and other gynecological procedures.

Fallopian tubes transport fertilised eggs from the ovaries to the womb and are essential to pregnancy. Fallopian tubes removed during these procedures are usually discarded.

Research team led by Jazedje, from the University of Sao Paulo Scientists in Brazil was able to isolate and assess the differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells from discarded human fallopian tubes.

Mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to develop into a range of different tissues.

In previous researches, scientists were able to differentiate mesenchymal stem cells obtained from umbilical cords, dental pulp and adipose tissue into muscle, fat, bone and cartilage cell lineages.

Jazedje said: "In addition to providing an additional potential source for regenerative medicine, these findings might contribute to reproductive science as a whole."
