Indonesian maid dies in Malaysian hospital after alleged abuse

Indonesian maid dies in Malaysian hospital after alleged abuseKuala Lumpur  - An Indonesian woman allegedly beaten up and then locked in a toilet for two days has died in hospital a week after being rescued, officials said Monday.

Mautik Hani, 36, was rescued from her Malaysian employer's home Tuesday. She was admitted to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur with cuts and bruises on her face and body.

The woman from Surabaya, reportedly slipped into a coma Saturday and died early Monday without regaining consciousness, an Indonesian embassy official said.

Postmortem results on the cause of death had not yet been released, he said.

After her rescue, police detained a 29-year-old employer for questioning. The woman's husband, a 30-year-old man with seven previous criminal offenses, surrendered himself a day later.

Police said Mautik, who was believed to have been working for two months, did not have any valid travel documents when she was found.

The case would likely further strain relations with Indonesia, which has responded to the increasing number of maid abuse cases by temporarily halting its domestic workers from being sent to Malaysia.

Indonesian maids currently earn from 400 ringgit (114 dollars) a month and work seven days a week. The maids are not allowed to keep their passports or bank account books.

Both countries are in the midst of negotiating a deal on salaries and conditions aimed at preventing mistreatment of maids, with Malaysia pledging to enforce an off-day for the workers.

Malaysia is home to 320,000 maids, of which about 85 per cent are from Indonesia. (dpa)
