Barclays to pay £63 million to its president Bob Diamond

Bob-Diamond-BarclaysBob Diamond, president of Barclays and head of its investment banking division got around £63 million as compensation for 2009. The bank provided this information in its annual report released yesterday. Bob Diamond has become the highest paid banker in Barclays now. In its annual report, the bank said that Bob Diamond had refused to get cash bonus in 2009.

Barclays said in its annual report that Mr. Diamond got an annual base salary of £250,000 for 2009. Besides this, Mr. Diamond was awarded shares worth £6 million while he could earn another £14 million in shares over coming two years if performance hits the target. He was also awarded performance related package of up to 5.56 million shares, which were worth nearly £20million at yesterday's closing price.

The bank also said that Mr. Diamond has earned £26.8 million in 2009 by selling his shares in Barclays Global Investors. Till date, Mr. Diamond has total shares of Barclays worth £30 million at yesterday's price.

Barclays said yester day that Mr. Diamond and Mr. John Varley, the chief executive, refused to take cash bonus this year. The bank said in its reports that the bank paid £2.7 billion in cash and share bonuses to its employees last month. The company also said that it reported a pretax profit of £11.6 billion for FY 2009.
