England’s full Commonwealth squad to arrive in Delhi
London, Sep 24 : England’s full Commonwealth squad is going to arrive in New Delhi to participate in the 2010 Games.
England confirmed on Thursday that they will definitely be sending a team to the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, ending the threat of a mass boycott by participating nations.
The Commonwealth Games England announced that all 17 member sports in the country had agreed unanimously to send athletes to the Games, bringing some good news for the organisers after preparations were plunged into crisis, The Telegraph reports.
“Our team in Delhi are now seeing the improved levels of resourcing which are required to resolve the significant operational issues, but we will continue to monitor the situation daily to ensure the village and stadia are safe and fit for purpose,” the statement said.
“The Board continues to press the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games Federation for assurances on both the stadia and the accommodation as well as liaising with the British Government. At all times the safety and security of our team is paramount,” it said.
The announcement came after team leaders of several nations reported a marked improvement in the rate of progress in repairing and cleaning of the 34 tower blocks of the Games village.
England chef de mission Craig Hunter said there was now a noticeable change in attitude, with hundreds of cleaners and maintenance staff hard at work in the accommodation areas, The Telegraph reports.
“We are pretty buoyant because today it didn''t rain and we continue to work with the organising committee to turn around the accommodation to a habitable state,” he said. (ANI)
