EU agrees multibillion-cubic-metre gas supply with Egypt, Iraq

European union flagBrussels - The European Union has agreed gas deliveries of 7 billion cubic metres annually with Egypt and Iraq, Energy Commissioner Andris Piebals announced Monday in Brussels.

Iraq is to supply around 5 billion cubic metres of natural gas from 2011 when the Akkas gasfield in the western part of the country is producing sufficient amounts.

Egypt has also agreed to supply the EU with 2 billion cubic metres of gas when the Arab gas pipeline is completed in 2009.

The pipeline will be connected with the Nabucco pipeline which will traverse Turkey en route to Europe. (dpa)
