As per the latest report by the Department of Agriculture report, last year witnessed a rise in the number of Americans, who faced trouble putting food on the table. The rise touched an unexpected hike of a record 17 million households.

The report made clear that there was an increase to 14.6% in the number of Americans that were hungry. The report has been released annually since 1995 and in 2007, the figure of Americans, who faced trouble in getting food was 11.1%, or 13 million households.  

The thing to note is that the hike in the current period  is more important, citing the figure of hungry Americans was never higher than 11.9% since these surveys commenced.  

As per the USDA, “Of the near-15% of the nation that couldn't secure enough food last year, one-third of them had very low food security, meaning they reduced the amount that they ate or disrupted their eating patterns during the year. That group made up 5.7% of all U.S. households, which was also a record high.”

It were households for children, which were 500,000 in figure and were able to scale back the amount that they ate, contributing higher 1.3% of all U.S. homes with children.

As per the USDA, poverty was the main reason for hunger and food insecurity in the country.
