Ohio saw Second-Highest Number of Drug Overdose Deaths In 2014

A study from the Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that was released on Friday showed that Ohio ranks second in the United States in terms of death from drug overdose.

The report showed that there was around one death every three hours last year in Ohio. On the other hand, in Kentucky there were more than 1,000 deaths, revealed report.

This data puts Ohio and Kentucky among the five states with the highest rates of drug overdose deaths as measured per 100,000 residents.

In order to cope with this issue, the Butler County Commissioners have planned to announce on Monday that they are forming a new opiate task force to address drug addiction.

The new program started in collaboration with Sojourner Recovery Services and other community efforts will focus majorly on perinatal care to help women and children.

The CDC analyzed recent mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System to track trends and characteristics of the crisis, including the types of drugs associated with these cases.

The report revealed that more number of people died in United States last year due to drug overdose than any other year on record. In total drug overdose claimed lives of approximately more than 47,000 Americans.

The areas, including Northeast, Midwest and South, have seen a high increase in death rates. Ohio has seen an increase of 18.3% in its rate from 2013 to 2014, the eighth-highest increase nationwide.

"Efforts to improve safer prescribing of prescription opioids must be intensified. In addition, efforts are needed to protect persons already dependent on opioids from overdose and other harms", the CDC report stated.
