Olympic champion Paerson to retire in 2010

Olympic champion Paerson to retire in 2010 Stockholm - Two-time overall World Cup champion Anja Paerson of Sweden is to retire from skiing at the end of the 2010 Olympic season.

"I intend to retire next year," the 2006 Olympic slalom gold medallist told Swedish television Sunday.

Paerson has won 40 World Cup races in her career and netted seven individual titles, becoming the first woman to win world championship gold in all five skiing disciplines.

However, the 27-year-old has had to battle with knee problems in the recently concluded season and finished out of the medals for the first time at the world championships in the French resort of Val d'Isere.

"I have learnt to live with my damaged knee," said Paerson. "I know what consequences it could have and that everything might be over tomorrow." (dpa)
