Ordinary Household Vinegar Can Help In Fat Control

VinegarA recent study revealed that ordinary household vinegar popularly used to garnish salad dressings, pickles and other foods has ability to fight fat.

Vinegar is used in various folk medicines for treatment of a range of diseases. The recent study has given scientific evidence of the fat fighting ability of the vinegar. Some studies have also shown that vinegar, called acetic acid, can help in controlling blood pressure and blood sugar.

Japanese researchers Tomoo Kondo and colleagues used animal models to study effect of vinegar on fat. Research team found that lab mice given a high-fat diet along with acetic acid developed significantly less body fat (up to 10 percent less), as compared to mice that were not given vinegar but same diet.

The researchers believe that the study indicates that acetic acid suppresses body fat accumulation by increasing fatty oxidation and thermogenesis in the liver through PPAR-alpha.

The research noted: "We intend to perform further clinical studies to confirm fat pad reduction and energy consumption enhancement by vinegar intake. Moreover, we will investigate the effect of acetic acid on fatty oxidative activation in other organs, particularly skeletal muscle."
