The paper route

Meet artist Rajendra Gole. He works with dentist's tools to create his art works with the medium of paper and glue. Don't be too quick to dismiss these works as those of 'craft.' These are three-dimensional paintings that are completely crafted from paper. In fact, every minute detail - the expression on the faces of animals and even human faces is all done with paper.

Two of Gole's works have been put up in the Art Fusion exhibition at Nehru Centre. He says, "I always work with the magnifying glass and small dentist's tools as I have to work with very tiny papers. It becomes very difficult to hold a miniscule piece of paper and stick it on a particular place and hence the articular tools."

This technique was developed by the artist himself and it took him two-and-a-half-years of trial and error to master. "A lot of people have appreciated my works and there are many who also criticise it, they say its not painting, it's craft but I ask them so what?" says Gole. He adds, "People in India are not very accepting about a new medium but things are changing and even my works have many collectors and appreciators. Raj Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray and also his dad Balasaheb Thackeray have told me that they like my works and they have attended all my exhibitions in Mumbai till date."

At Art Fusion, there is another artist — Ghatpande Satish who has also presented works of paper. His White House is an example of great work of shadow effect and also displays his skills on paper. All the art works in the exhibition range from Rs25,000 to 6 lacs.Work by artist Rajendra Gole and below left work by artist Ghatpande Satish (d_riddhi@dnaindia.net)
