India to have separate police for touristsThere will be separate police force for the security and safety of travelers, said Tourism Minister Ambika Soni Thursday.

The new force will be called Tourist Security Organisation.

The tourism ministry in consultation with the ministries of home and defence and state governments had framed guidelines for forming the force, Soni said in Lok Sabha.  

“The guidelines have been sent to the state governments and union territories,” the minister said.

Efforts are on to have inclusive growth in tourism sector: Ambika Soni

Ambika SoniNew Delhi, Nov 18 : Union Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni today said that all efforts are on to have inclusive growth in the tourism sector in the country.

Addressing the meeting of Consultative Committee attached to Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Culture here, Soni said schemes are being formulated and implemented in a manner that urban rural divide is bridged and every social and ethnic group is included in the promotion of tourism in the country.

Ambika Soni to chair world tourism meetingNew Delhi, Oct 13 : The 84th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) executive council meeting will be in Madrid, Spain on October 14.

The meeting would be chaired by the Union Minister Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni.

A Study conducted by tourism experts on global imbalances and tourism growth would be presented in the UNWTO executive council meeting, which would highlight the steps that can be taken by member states for promoting tourism in the current economic scenario.

Ambika Soni opens Aman Umeed tourist complex at Wagha

Ambika SoniAttari-Wagah Road, (Amritsar), Oct. 7 : Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni inaugurated a tourist resort – the Aman Umeed Bhawan – here on Tuesday.

It was earlier known as Neem Chameli.

The new tourist resort has been set with the expectation that it will draw more tourists through the Wagah – Attari land route in the future.

Spread over 1.75 acres of land, the Aman Umeed Bhawan has a built up area of about 10,000 square feet. It has facilities like restaurants, a bar, shops and resting rooms for domestic and foreign tourists, particularly those from Pakistan.

Amritsar, Oct 7 : Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni has inaugurated a tourist resort, Aman Umeed Bhawan, earlier popularly known as Neem Chameli at Attari-Wagha international border in Amritsar.

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal was also present on the occasion.

After inaugurating the complex, Soni said the flow of tourists from across the border will help in further promoting peace between the two countries.

"Tourism has vast potential for employment generation and Institute of Hotel Management set up in the area will provide opportunities for youth to work in the sector," she added.

Railways have a critical role in promotion of tourism in India: Ambika Soni

Transport industry is an integral part of tourism: Ambika Soni

Ambika SoniNew Delhi, Sept 26 : Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said that the onus of making India a successful tourist destination lies not only with the Ministry of Tourism but also on the entire tourism industry, which includes transport industry.

Soni was speaking at the Convention of the Indian Tourist Transporters Association (ITTA) at Ashoka Hotel, New Delhi today.

“When we in the Ministry of Tourism talk about inclusive growth through tourism we are also thinking about those people who are involved in the transport sector as they are vital for sustaining India’s tourism industry,” said Soni.

Ambika Soni to begin South Africa visit from August 14New Delhi, Aug 12 : Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni will be on an official visit to South Africa from August 14 to 19 to represent Government of India at the Centenary Commemoration event of the burning of the registration certificate in Johannesburg by M. K. Gandhi and the fellow Indians.

During her visit, Soni will meet South Africa’s Culture Minister Z. Pallo Jordan and sign a Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) between the two countries on the August 15.

Ambika Soni releases first Korean-Hindi dictionary

Seoul, June 17 : Ambika Soni releases first Korean-Hindi dictionaryTourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni has released the first Korean-Hindi dictionary during her recent trip to attend the UNWTO executive council meeting.

The work on this dictionary started in 1994 and contains more than 50,000 main entries including 20,000 sub-entries with over 700 pages.

The Government of Republic of Korea and the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India have provided financial grant for this project.

India asks tourism industry to guard against economic recession and natural disasters

Ambika SoniSeoul, June 13 : Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni today said that to maintain high growth rate, tourism industry should guard itself against volatile economic trends and unforeseen natural disasters.

Addressing the 83rd Session of the Executive Council meeting of United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) at Jeju islands in South Korea, she said there were ample opportunities for encouraging tourism in South Asia but an increase in oil prices and economic recession may harm the tourism prospects in the region.

Natural disasters like cyclone in Myanmar and earthquake in China may also make the tourism scenario grim, Soni said.

Rs. 484.58 lakh for tourism hub at Wagah Border

Ambika SoniNew Delhi, Apr 15 : Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni today said that the Ministry of Tourism sanctioned Rs. 484.58 lakh to the Government of Punjab for the project ‘Integrated Development of Wagah/ Attari Border as a tourist destination’ during the year 2005-06.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Ambika said, ‘The components of the project includes development of tourist facilities and upgradation of surroundings of Wagah/ Attari Border, construction of Aman Umeed Bhawan and development of Rajasansi Village Carpet Weaver Complex.”

Addressing a gathering in Beijing today after inaugurating the India Tourism Office, she said, “The India Ttourism Office in Beijing has been set up as per agreed plan of action for India-China Friendship Year Celebrations during 2007. The office will further increase people-to-people contact between the two countries and strengthen bilateral relations between India and China further.”

Soni, Choudhry say Goa Police probe of UK girl's death embarrassing

London, Mar. 5: Tourism Minister Ambika SoniTwo ministers of the Indian Government have described the investigation into the death of a 15-year-old British girl in Goa as an embarrassment.

Tourism Minister Ambika Soni and the Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chaudhary have said the way detectives in Goa had handled the investigation into the death of Scarlett Keeling in Anjuna was "an embarrassment".

This has prompted the local police to re-open the case.

According to The Telegraph, Keeling's body was found on the morning of February 19, just hours after she was seen leaving a beach bar.

“The cabinet committee has approved the draft affidavit to bore a major new shipping Lane, Sethusamudram Ship Canal, made by the group of ministers given an authorization to shipping ministry to file it.

heritage. I saw paintings and phulkaris (embroidery). These are
beautiful. The musical instruments are rare," she said.

Ambika Soni to inaugurate adventure tourism convention

New Delhi, Dec 17: Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika SoniMinister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni will inaugurate the Sixth Annual Convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) here this evening.

On the occasion, Soni will release a special 30 second television commercial on adventure tourism and also release the report on Incredible India campaign during 2007.

The convention titled ‘Adventure Tourism: The Next Step’ will see participation of national and international experts in the adventure travel segment.

Ambika Soni to attend 17th session of UNWTO General Assembly

New Delhi, Nov 24: Union Culture Minister Ambika SoniUnion Culture Minister Ambika Soni will leave for Colombia today to attend the 17th Session of General Assembly of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

During the General Assembly of the UNWTO, Soni will attend the ministerial meeting and make a statement in the plenary session.

During her three-day visit, she will also have bilateral meetings with her counterparts of Colombia, China, Turkey Egypt, South Africa and South Asian Countries.
